It’s what happened to Jews in Germany in 1938 when their passports were declared invalid. That is what is beginning to happen here, now, to Hispanic citizens along the U.S.-Mexico border.
Oh, is it bad to compare the GOP to Nazis? Well, if members of the GOP do not like being compared to Nazis, they should consider not behaving exactly like Nazis.
Hispanic U.S. citizens, some of whom were in the U.S. military, are not being allowed to renew their passports. This is reportedly happening to “hundreds, even thousands” of Latinos, according to a report in the Washington Post. They’re getting letters from the State Department saying it does not believe they are citizens. The government claims their citizenships are fraudulent. “I’ve had probably 20 people who have been sent to the detention center—U.S. citizens,” Jaime Diez, an attorney in Brownsville, told The Washington Post.
The Washington Post also reports on ICE officials coming to citizens’ homes and taking their passports away. This is an escalation from a few months ago, when Americans were detained by ICE officials just for speaking Spanish to one another.
The administration is currently launching an effort to take citizenship from people who they suspect of fraud in obtaining it. Fraud in these cases is exceedingly rare. The last time the government tried to strip people of their citizenship was, according to Columbia Professor Mae Ngai, during The Red Scare of the 1950s. As Ngai remarks, McCarthyism is not typically remembered as a good period in American history.
There is good reason to believe that this could portend still worse things to come for the U.S. Hispanic population, unless people begin to speak out loudly, and fast.
First, they came for the Hispanics and I did nothing.

Then, when they came for me, there was no one to do nothing.

Everyone needs to see this. We can’t just let them discriminate against us, we have rights and we should fight for them. Our government is actively trying to push down minorities and no one is talking about it. This affects me and many of my friends. This could affect you or a friend you have. Even if this doesnt affect you, SPREAD THIS INFORMATION AND BE AN ALLY. We’re not gonna live in a broken country where freedom and equality is preached but only certain groups have those rights to equality and liberty. Skipping Stone Foundation is a not-for-profit that was born out of experience and a very desperate need. The system for transgender youth and their families is a difficult one to navigate and until the creation of the organization, there were few resources to help.
Last year, Skipping Stone supported 40 kids. This year it’s over 200 and the need is growing. Its co-founder, Lindsay Peace, said it’s been the most rewarding work.
I cannot stress enough how essential this Foundation is, because this is where I live, and without their help, you have to fight both your parents, your doctor AND God himself to get a referral to the Foothills- but the specialist there is so backlogged it’ll be a nine-month wait minimum.
Some kids can’t wait that long. Many don’t have a private doctor who can safely get them that referral in the first place. Mine at the time had to Google the specialist while I sat there spelling out exactly why I wanted to see this specialist… and begging him, BEGGING HIM, not to tell my parents. I’m a legal adult and he told anyway.
Please fund the Skipping Stone Foundation. You will literally be saving lives.

a friend of mine told me about her friend i think from high school who was gay but not out, and he pretended for a while to have a girlfriend named Amanda who he would go see a lot, and they’d be all, come hang out with us and he’d be like sorry I’ve got a date with Amanda, and they were like when are we gonna meet this Amanda??? anyway he kept this up for like a year until he finally came out; and when his friends were like, “wait, what about Amanda?” he said, “IT’S A MAN, DUH.”
