That one time Holmes stared at Watson’s face and eyes from across the room then gave a 395 word description of what Watson’s exact thoughts were in that moment based on the sparkling of his eyes and the quivering of his lips and interrupted when he noticed Watson touching his old wound and thinking about the senseless horrors of war

Animation of my very favorite BBC Radio Sherlock Holmes play, “The Lion’s Mane.”

I could go on for hours about why it’s so great – part of me thinks you have to have loved Holmes and hunted down trivia tidbits and developed a great anger at the “stupid Watson” school of thought to really enjoy it.

But it’s really good just as a stand alone, two-person radio play of two very, very old friends talking about stuff.

opera-comic:

I like the idea of Watson having a bulldog. It’s only once mentioned that he has a bull pup in a Study in Scarlet, and there it’s not quite clear if it means a literal puppy or is a reference to his sometimes short temper. I went with the first, and tried to give the dog a not so extreme brachycephalic apperance of the modern bulldogs.

And my personal idea is, that during the course of his friendship with Holmes he had at least two bulldogs. The one mentioned in A Study in Scarlet, and then during the Hiatus a second one, after the first one died of old age. And the second one helped Watson greatly through his time of grief over the loss of Holmes and his wife Mary.

As much as I adore Martin Freeman’s John, for me the ultimate portrayal of (a Victorian) Dr. Watson will always belong to David Burke, the original Watson opposite Jeremy Brett’s Holmes in the Granada series.
This took me AGES to draw (like 3 months on and off maybe?), but I just had to finish it today.

Happy 81st Birthday, sir! You are loved more than you know. ❤
